2020 Kentucky Derby odds, predictions: Surprising picks from top expert who’s nailed six straight races

With one leg of the Triple Crown schedule complete, the top three-year-old horses in the world are getting plenty of preparation before the 2020 Kentucky Derby goes off Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs. The re-imagined Triple Crown season was necessary amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the Belmont Stakes going first this year in June instead of its usual anchor spot. The 2020 Run for the Roses will be contested on the first full Saturday of the college football schedule, but it will be just as prestigious.

Tiz The Law, who dominated down the stretch in the Belmont Stakes, is atop the early 2020 Kentucky Derby odds at 7-2. Honor A.P. And Authentic, who both skipped the Belmont, are 5-1 an 8-1, respectively, as favored 2020 Kentucky Derby contenders. Before making any horse racing predictions, you’ll want to see the latest 2020 Kentucky Derby picks from SportsLine’s Jody Demling.

A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling enters the 2020 Kentucky Derby on a major heater on his horse racing picks. He has the picked the winner in six straight races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes. At the Belmont, the first Triple Crown race of 2020, Demling called Tiz the Law the class of the field and he pulled away for a convincing victory.

This is the same handicapper who hit the Oaks-Derby double at Churchill Downs nine times in the last 11 years. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby all but twice in his last 11 tries. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Now, Demling has released his early 2020 Kentucky Derby picks, predicting where every horse will finish. He’s sharing all of it at SportsLine.

2020 Kentucky Derby expert predictions

One surprise: Demling is fading King Guillermo even though Juan Carlos Avila’s horse won the Tampa Bay Derby and finished second in the Arkansas Derby. The Juan Carlos Avila-trained horse was runner-up to Nadal in the Arkansas Derby and was eligible to compete in the 2020 Triple Crown after a late $3,000 payment. Owner and former MLB All-Star Victor Martinez opted to keep King Guillermo out of the Belmont Stakes.

A three-year-old son of Uncle Mo, King Guillermo appears safely in the 2020 Kentucky Derby field based on his 90 qualifying points and No. 5 ranking on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. King Guillermo’s victory in the Tampa Bay Derby, in which he defeated Sole Volante by 4 3/4 lengths, came following a layoff of more than three months. However, Demling believes King Guillermo’s four-month layoff is “not ideal” and doesn’t recommend including the horse in your 2020 Kentucky Derby bets.

Another shocker: Demling is high on Cezanne, even though he’s a 30-1 long shot in the latest Kentucky Derby odds 2020. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin out of Achieving and trained by Bob Baffert, Cezanne burst on the three-year old scene with a convincing 2 1/2-length victory in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden race June 6 at Santa Anita.

Cezanne looked smooth throughout that race and clocked a quick 1:16.13 under jockey Flavian Prat to hold off Charlito and Rayray down the stretch. Purchased for $3.65 million in 2019, Cezanne is a horse on the rise. Demling agrees, saying Cezanne’s first run was “dazzling” and believing he’s one of the horses you should back in your 2020 Kentucky Derby bets.

How to make 2020 Kentucky Derby picks

In addition, Demling is high on a double-digit long shot who benefits big-time from the Kentucky Derby 2020 being moved to September, saying this “late developer” could win it all. He’s only sharing which horse to back, and his entire projected 2020  leaderboard, here.

Which horse wins the Kentucky Derby 2020? And which double-digit long shot is a must-back? Check out the latest 2020 Kentucky Derby odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Demling’s picks for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, and find out.
