Round 1 of the Northern Trust is complete. In the star-studded field which includes most of the top 50 golfers in the world Troy Merritt is on top of the leaderboard. That’s right, Merritt went out early in the day shot a 9 under 62 and it stood up. He has some chasers though in Dustin Johnson at -8, Jon Rahm and Kevin Kisner at -7, Tony Finau, Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose all at -6.Troy Merritt has his work cut out for him leading after one round, but with McIlroy, Rose, Rahm and Johnson right behind it is going to be challenging to say the least.
Today was Webb Simpson’s sixth straight round of 65 or lower. He’s 40-under-par in his last 9 PGA Tour rounds.
Jordan Spieth didn’t make a bogey and is 4 under.
Phil Mickelson shot an even par 72 today. He has been under par only 5 rounds since the Masters.
Tiger shot a lackluster 4 over 75 and is one shot out of last place.
It should make for a very interesting weekend with the group of big names chasing Merritt for the victory in the first event of the 2019 Fed Ex Cup Playoffs
