The Los Angeles Lakers (45-13 SU, 35-26-1 ATS) laid an egg last night in Memphis getting beat soundly 105-88 by the Grizzles.
LeBron sat out the second game of a back-to-back earlier in the week to rest the strained groin he has been dealing with. He aggravated the injury in the Lakers 118-109 home win over New Orleans last Tuesday night. He was listed as doubtful last night against Memphis but ultimately suited up and played. Anthony Davis has been banged up and injured his elbow Tuesday night against the Pelicans.
The Lakers were held to a season low 88 points, made only 9 of 36 three-point attempts, had 14 turnovers and shot just 41% from the field against Memphis. LeBron had 19 points and 10 assists, AD had 15 points and 9 rebounds as the Lakers recorded only their second loss for the month of February. It was the first Western Conference road loss for the Lakers this season. It ended their 7-game winning streak and their NBA record 18-game road winning streak against the Western Conference.
They now have to take the short flight from Memphis to New Orleans to play the Pelicans in a second game of a back-to-back on the road.
New Orleans (26-33 SU, 29-27-3 ATS) has lost all three games so far this season against the Lakers. They covered getting 6.5 in a 114-110 loss in the first game at home on November 27th, then pushed January 3rd in LA getting 10 and losing 123-113. Tuesday night in LA they hung around for most of the game then struggled offensively at the end to lose 118-109 and miss the cover getting 7.5.
Zion Williamson had 29 points in 33 minutes of play and is averaging 23.4 points per game this season. In the first two games, prior to Zion being in the lineup, former Pelican Anthony Davis averages 43.5 points and 11 rebounds. In Tuesday night’s game with Zion in the lineup Davis had only 23 points and 6 rebounds. In Friday night’s game against Cleveland Williamson had his tenth game in a row with at least 20 points scoring 24 and Brandon Ingram led the way with 29.
When asked about the ability of he and Zion to both be productive when playing together he said” I think we just figure out who’s hot and just continue to go to him.”
Pelican point guard Lonzo Ball who came over from the Lakers with Brandon Ingram in the trade for Anthony Davis, told reporters after Friday night’s win over Cleveland “Things are only going to get better going from here. We just got our team back, so hopefully we can make a playoff push…We still have time, that’s the great thing. We kind of control our own destiny.”
The Pelicans have gone 20-11 since they started the season 6-22 and they have moved from 11th place to now trail Memphis by only 2 ½ games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. If the Pelicans can make a playoff push and move into the eighth spot their reward would be that they would be getting a first-round matchup with the Lakers.
